TOLEDO, OHIO -- Residents on Capistrano in Toledo’s West Side are tired of their basements flooding every time it rains.  So, one resident went door-to-door getting the names and addresses of more than thirty people who received flooding in a three-block radius of his home on Capistrano.

In the past eight years his basement has flooded five times.  He can’t get insurance because they told him that his basement has had to be dry for three consecutive years.  His neighbors are in the same predicament.  They thought the Shantee Creek Widening Project would have alleviated some of these problems.  They say it hasn’t and the project is in its final stage.

Councilwoman Lindsay Webb gave us this statement today over the phone:  "My heart goes out to the neighbors. I held an informational meeting in the Fall about this issue. I am proposing to increase the storm water utility rate so we can make capital project improvements more quickly with a priority being the feeder system into Shantee Creek."

Webb says there appears to be an overloading problem and residents need to back her on proposing the rate increase.

Toledo has a Basement Flooding Grant Program.  To learn more about it, visit: Basement flooding grant program

The city does not care. Plain and simple. I live in Point Place and have flooded twice this year so far and the city just says it's not it's problem. I'm flooding as I write this and the city will not even look at it until sometime tomorrow. Toledo needs to put it's own money into fixing these problems and get it done now, not wait until the grants replenish. I would be curious to know if the people that received grant money to fix flooding if the problem was actually solved. I have applied for the grants but was told they were out of money til April. I then got three estimates and three different ways to fix it. What next? Toledo, get a crew, fix the problem.

Basement Flooding in West Toledo

I live on north of Shantee Creek between Bennett Road and Lewis Avenue. My neighborhood constantly floods. I have seen the extensive improvements to the Wet Weather Treatment plant at Bayview and Shantee Creek. It was the neighborhoods understanding that this would elevate the flooding in our neighborhood. It has not...I also, have seen recent sewer maps from the study that was conducted in the Bennett Neighborhoods Area and it was pointed out that many area's in the neighborhood have separate storm sewers and sanitary sewers. Well if this is the case then why when it rains does the sanitary sewer surcharge into the basements? Possibly a "Cross" (where the storm sewers crosses into the sanitary sewers when the storm sewer can not handle the rain water or snow melt off). I would hope the city would take responsibilty and correct these problems...The flooding is getting old.

I live there.

I live in the area profiled in the news story. My brother and our neighbors put alot of work into collecting signatures and Mrs. Council woman if you think you have heard the last of us....think again. A new charge to do what the city should already be doing is not the answer. Come live with me during any rainy season, help me clean up after the sewer backs up and pay to replace my valuables then we can talk new charges. I've paid enough!! Anytime you want to come experience this just knock on my door and I will welcome you with open arms, I can always use more help sloping the $#!* from the basement

I dont think that the rate increase

needs to be done. I think that the city needs to do their job and get these homes to where they dont flood. They need to have better sewer drainage. How would they like it if their homes flooded every year or so. They would want the city to do their job so that this kind of stuff doesnt happena gain. You think Carty cares about other peoples homes flooding with sewer? Heck no, just as long as his doesnt, screw everyone else.
