TOLEDO, OHIO -- The big freeze sets in.  Temperatures plunge to dangerous levels, and blowing snow is creating more problems.  Single digit temps combined with sub-zero wind chills have created the coldest conditions we’ve had this year.

“Oh it’s frigid.  It’s frigid.  Why do we live here?” says Dana Wolfe, a Toledo resident.

The fact is we do live here.  We know it snows.  We know it’s cold.  Yet, too many of us aren’t prepared to safely venture out in these conditions.

"I'm not really prepared for the cold.  I've got rain ponchos if I have to work on the car in wet weather.  I'm not prepared now that you mention it, kinda makes you think,” says Randy Thackerm, another Toledo resident.

Running a quick errand may not seem like reason enough to bundle up.  Considering how quickly an accident can happen, you never know just how long you may be out in the cold.

“My mom and my brother, I don't think they really got that much in the car to stay warm,” says Toledoan Deonah Green.

Blankets, hand warmers, extra clothes, even an emergency kit.  These are quick, inexpensive, potential lifesavers every car should contain.

"It's important to keep with you extra set of gloves, maybe some blankets, and bottles of water.  I definitely keep bottles of water in my car,” says Wolfe.

This arctic blast has even prompted the Finkbeiner administration to issue a warning to residents, especially the elderly.  Toledoans are urged to stay indoors, don’t shovel or lift in the cold air, don’t travel unless you must, and to drive with extreme caution.

The sub-zero temps are expected to last for the next few days.  Now is the time to prepare yourself, just in case the unexpected does happen.

You might want to read the topic a little more carefully before blasting others next time. But to make it easier for you, we're talking about the cold temperatures here, not your overly exaggerated snowfall totals...

I'll just bet when you walked to school the snow was 3-feet deep and it was uphill both ways....

I can see what this one person is saying about the schools being open. I know if my kids attended public schools, I sure as heck wouldnt let them walk in this weather. It is way to cold. Yes we can bundle up like this other viewer is saying, however, do you really want to walk out in the cold if you dont have to? I think for the safety for all children, when it is this cold there should not be any school. For one, many parents ahve to go to work, and they trust that their kids will dress appropiately, however many kids dont dress that way. Bless their hearts, they sure try though. You see most of the other schools on a 2 hour delay. What about Toledo Public? Oh no. They were open that day that we got all that snow.

To be blunt, we've really become a bunch of wimps with our heated seats and remote car starters. I remember walking to school over a mile in weather colder this when I was kid and I did fine.

They didn't cancel schools then, why should they do it now? Oh wait I know, it's fear of litigation in our lawsuit-happy society. Bundle up and use common sense people! Folks in Canada get along just fine in conditions far worse than this everyday.

irresponsilble

IT IS IRRESPONSIBLE OF TOLEDO PUBLIC SCHOOLS NOT TO CLOSE WITH TEMPS. THIS LOW. CLEARLY THEY FORGET THERE ARE SOME CHILDREN WHO ARE FORCED TO WALK TO SCHOOL.

You ask the question are we ready for the big freeze. I noticed most people marked they were. But really who is wanting cold weather, and really ready for it. This kind of weather no one actually wants. So I find that question pretty outrageous.
