Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele said Monday that there is "no hypocrisy" in RNC staffers getting abortion coverage from their insurer.

POLITICO reported earlier this month that the committee -- despite a party platform that opposes abortion rights -- has been covering the procedure since 1991 under a health coverage plan provided by Cigna. The RNC has since announced that it will opt out of coverage for the procedure.

"We have done some digging into that and it's not as it appears, as we found out from our insurance carrier," Steele said during an interview on CNN's "American Morning." "We're going to be having further conversation on that point."

Steele insisted, though, that despite the committee's past coverage of the procedure for its staff, "the Republican Party has made it very clear, I certainly have as chairman, that we will not cover such elective abortions in our insurance policy."

"There's no hypocrisy here," Steele declared, "actually, very consistent."

"If that was the case, people didn't know that that was part of the policy," he added. "We did an investigation, a forensic overview of our policies, as I thought we should do. We found this language and we've now fixed the problem."

A Cigna spokesman declined to comment on the RNC's heath coverage in the initial POLITICO report, but Steele pointed a finger at the insurance company for allowing the story to spread.

"Cigna should not be talking about our insurance policy," he said.

Steele on Abortion

How is this not hypocrisy?! Steele is a jackass and a puppet for the Republican party. As for the outcry over not using "tax payer dollars" to cover abortion, well I don't want my tax dollars going for a lot of things, like illegal and immoral wars, but that's where most of it goes. If you don't want to have an abortion, don't, but leave everyone else alone; it's their body and between them, their families and physicians, and their own conscience.

And what would you do if your page girl was pregnant? You know we need the "coverage" cause us politician's aren't going to pay for our fun!
