TOLEDO, OHIO -- The Maumee River may not look any different to this year, but beneath the surface, changes are happening...and they aren't very good.

Researchers say that the Maumee is experiencing some of the highest levels of phosphorus recorded in the last 40 years. The high levels are alarming because they could signal the start of increased algae and pollution problems for the river and Lake Erie.

River watchers are keeping a close ee on the changes taking place in order to determine whether fertilizer run-off is the source for the high phosphorus levels.
