SWANTON, OHIO -- Don't be alarmed by smoke, sirens, explosions and other unusual noises you may hear beginning Wednesday...it's only a test.
Members of the Air Force and Air National Guard's Langley Air Force Base will be in town through Sunday to conduct realistic war-time scenarios with personnel from the 180th Fighter Wing in Swanton. The drills are part of an Operational Readiness Inspection (ORI) that is conducted by the Air Force about every five years.
The 180th will undergo inspection beginning Wednesday, Jul. 28 through Sunday, Aug. 1. Airmen will take part in exercises and tests to prepare them for real world wartime operations. They will be tested while wearing chemical gear and gas masks, conducting self-aid and buddy care, and taking cover in bunkers.
Residents should expect to hear increased flying of fighter jets in the area, including at night. There will also be visible smoke, sounds of explosions, sirens, and attack announcements.
