(Tiffin)--It's estimated five acres of farmland are lost an hour to commercial development. No doubt, this number has many ag folks worried. But now, in the Buckeye state, there's a movement to turn the tide and preserve area farms.

Farming is in Phyllis Burks' blood. She and her husband have run the Burks Farm in Seneca County for a half century, and she says she has no plans of stopping anytime soon.

The non-profit Black Swamp Conservancy recently partnered with the landowners and the Ohio Department of Agriculture to reach a land conservation agreement on 153 acres on this property just north of Tiffin. The move essentially blocks any type of development from ever happening.

Since the land conservation program started, thousands of acres of farmland have been spared.

If you want your farmland protected...you can log onto www.blackswamp.org or call 419-872-5263 for more information.
