TOLEDO, OHIO -- The city has put on hold over 100 layoff notices sent to Toledo Police officers earlier this week.
The move comes after Toledo Mayor Mike Bell met with representatives of the Toledo Police Patrolmen's Association on Wednesday. After what the Mayor's office calls "meaningful and good faith dialogue" between the two sides, it was agreed that the 125 proposed officers cuts would be taken off the table, for now.
The city will postpone the officer cuts measure as it continues to work toward the balancing of a $48 million budget deficit.
Mayor Bell sent out a list of the intended Toledo Police positions to be cut on Monday.
On Tuesday, Toledo Police Chief Mike Navarre released a memo he sent to the Mayor's office on Mar.8, outlining his view of how a reduction in department staffing would impact the city of Toledo. With the impending Toledo Police cuts and the expectation of an additional loss due to retirement, Chief Navarre saw the number of police officers on the streets to be reduced to 440 by Dec. 31, 2010. The number is down from 591 officers currently sworn-in. "Having 440 sworn officers at year's end would equate to a ratio of 1.38 per 1,000 people in our city. This ratio is dangerously low and would seriously impact the ability of our police department to keep this community safe," wrote Chief Navarre.
Local 92 President ,Wayne Hartford, spoke after a Toledo City Council meeting on Tuesday evening, saying the Bell administration had informed him that pink slips would be handed out on Friday. Those layoffs are expected to occur, as of now.
