(Toledo)--Federal stimulus money is hard at work for some low income families across Lucas County.
Toledo's Neighborhood Housing Services, or NHS, recently received $8 million dollars of government stimulus money to insulate and efficiently heat many homes at no cost. The non-profit is about a fifth of the way there, and there's no stopping this program until the job is done.
One home off arcadia in central Toledo is getting some serious renovations done to it. Not really for cosmetics but for practical purposes instead. It's undergoing major weatherization through attic and side wall insulation and air sealing. All this for energy efficiency. Approximately $400 of savings a year!
NHS is overseeing the project. The non-profit's mission is to restore and revitalize. This home is one of at least a thousand undergoing eco-friendly changes in the next year and a half. Project backers say at the same time the economy is getting its own makeover through the addition of hired help and the purchase of work vehicles to accomplish the goals.
Again it's worth mentioning the Home Weatherization Assistance Program provides free insulation, weather sealing, and even furnace upgrades but only for certain customers. It's for those whose income is as much as double the poverty rate, some $44-thousand for a family of four. To see if you qualify call 419-691-2900.
