PERRYSBURG (AP) -- Not even a recession or double-digit unemployment can slow down Ohio's political fundraising machines.
Most campaign strategists expect Democrats and Republicans will break campaign spending records this year in their bids for the governor's office and an open U.S. Senate seat.
The money race gets rolling this evening when former President Bill Clinton headlines events in suburban Toledo and Youngstown for Ohio Governor Ted Strickland, who is seeking a second term. Next week, former White House adviser Karl Rove will visit Ohio to raise money for the county Republican Party in Toledo.
Tickets for Clinton's Toledo appearance ranged from $1,000 to $10,000 and were in high demand, forcing the event to move from a private home to a private club. The invitation-only event is happening at the Carranor Hunt and Polo Club in Perrysburg.
Toledo Mayor Mike Bell will serve as an honorary chairman for the fundraiser.
Strickland is running against former Ohio Republican Congressman John Kasich in the November election.
