TOLEDO -- The City of Toledo officially begins the switch to automated trash pick-up Monday.
The city began delivering 96-gallon containers to households last year as it began its pilot program. All households will receive two of the containers unless they have specially requested smaller sizes.
New garbage trucks purchased by the city will use an automated side-arm to lift the containers and dump trash into the truck. The trucks will be manned by a lone driver, instead of the usual three-person crew on existing, traditional refuse trucks. The city hopes to save millions of dollars with the move to automated pick-up.
The transition will be gradual, with only a portion of the city's households starting on the new system this week. The city expects that all Toledo households will have automated refuse pick-up by March of 2010.
