SYLVANIA, OHIO -- Sylvania Schools are one of nearly three dozen districts across the state to receive a grant allowing them to equip their buses with green technology.
The $1.8 million Ohio's Clean Diesel School Bus grant is handed out by the Ohio Environment Protection Agency to 31 districts across Ohio.
Sylvania Schools will receive $44,234 to retrofit 27 buses with pollution control technology. The buses will be fitted with diesel oxidation catalysts and closed crankcase filter systems.
The district's transportation director, Joe Kahl, says the grant will not only help extend the life of the buses but hold the district accountable to the community both economically and environmentally.
According to the Ohio EPA, the grants will help outfit 536 buses, achieve an estimated 1380.6 pounds of particulates, 10,203.1 pounds of carbon monoxide, and 5,150 pounds of hydrocarbons statewide.
