OTTAWA HILLS, OHIO -- The village of Ottawa Hills took a major step forward in addressing its deer population explosion by passing a resolution amending a village ordinance that previously banned deer hunting.
After a two and half four public discussion the village council voted 4-2 in favor of ending the hunting ban. The ordinance change gives the village the option of hiring a company to come in and eliminate roughly 50 deer from Ottawa Hills.
Monday night's meeting at the Ottawa Hills elementary school was attended by several hundred people. All but one who spoke voiced opposition to culling the deer and most recognized that there was an issue with overpopulation.
The village estimates that it would cost between $25,000-$30,000 to trim the deer population by 50.
