(Swanton, OH)  -- To anyone born after the Nixon Adminisatration the new blue neon  "Swanton" sign on Airport Highway looks like a new sign. But it's actually an old familiar landmark that's been given a facelift and a chance to shine again over the roadway where it used to point the way to downtown Swanton. After finding the old retro-looking sign in a city garage, community leaders and citizens of Swanton decided to fix it up and put it back up again to help give the town a retro feel and to let drivers on Airport Highway know there is more to their village than the busy commercial strip along State Route 2.  Neil Toeppe, the Executive Director of the Swanton Chamber of Commerce says the original sign was taken down sometime in the late 70's after it fell into disrepair. After finding the sign again, there was great interest in getting the sign a second life. Toeppe says "we have had nothing but tremendous support from the town and the community."  He says the business community raised about 10,000 dollars to restore the sign with new neon lights that will shine purple and white.

The electricity for the sign is not free. It is being probvided at"no additional cost" to the village. As I understand it the village negotiates a rate for the electricity for street lights, etc. with Toledo Edison and the sign will be included with that negortiated rate.

"free electricity"

Who is paying for this? Following is a quote from The Swanton Enterprise (newspaper) titled "'Swanton' arrow will guide drivers downtown" --
"Toledo Edison is providing the electricity for the sign at no additional cost to the village."
Toledo Edison has the highest rates in the area. How many others are receiving free electricity? Is that why our bills are so high?
