TOLEDO -- A North Toledo woman who gave birth to twins via C-section on Monday died Thursday after experiencing flu-like symptoms. Officials have yet to say whether the young woman had the H1N1 virus.
24-year-old Mandy Kimbler was admitted to the hospital on October 25. The previous evening she had complained to her younger sister Kelly Emahiser that she was having difficulty breathing. "I went to a wedding on the 24th and then I went to her house afterwards and she was having trouble breathing and then I got a text at 5:13 a.m. the following morning that she was going to the hospital," Ms. Emahiser said.
Lucas County Health Commissioner Dr. David Grossman says it will be a few days before tests confirm whether or not Kimbler was stricken with H1N1. Regardless Dr. Grossman says all pregnant women in Lucas County should get the H1N1 vaccine. "When you are pregnant there is an alteration of the immune system that tends to make it difficult for these women to handle certain viral infections," Dr. Grossman.
Kimbler's twin sons, named Bradley and Braden were born 7 weeks premature. They are in a neo-natal intensive care unit at an area hospital. The family says their prognosis is good. Kimbler is also survived by a three year old daughter and her husband David. The couple recently celebrated their 2nd wedding anniversary.
