Amongst the students at Bowling Green State University, a battle is raging between humans and zombies.
“Where else can you experience the full adrenaline rush of a zombie apocalypse in the completely safe environment of campus,” said Patrick Conrad, a Bowling Green Senior and Vice President of ‘The BG Undead.’
Once a semester, over 300 students sign up for a week long game where designated zombies have the goal to attack humans, turning them into zombies while the humans arm themselves with socks and Nerf guns to keep the zombies at bay.
This group of ‘Undead’ is actually one of the largest registered student organizations on campus.
“We receive money from the University to help with our costs,” said Conrad.
Close to $1,600 per year in fact.
The money goes toward official game bandannas, other apparel, special events, and food.
Of course the money for the weapons like the Six Shot Maverick, and the sock grenade comes from the player's pockets.
Their games, played once a semester, are cleared through those who have permanent zombie immunity, namely the Dean of Students and campus police.
“Before every game we have a meeting with them. We establish the rules for the game, if they've changed from the previous semesters or not. We take into account any safety concerns they have,” said Atonn Smeltzer, the founder of ‘The BG Undead.’
‘The Undead’ say they deserve funding and credibility as much as any music or political student organization.
So with college approval and funding, the battle will rage on until the final stand on Thursday.
