COLUMBUS- The Fort Meigs State Memorial in Perrysburg will receive $200,000 in state capital funds from the state Controlling Board to preserve the setting of the historic site.
State Senator Mark Wagoner (R-Ottawa Hills) announced that the funding will allow the Cultural Facilities Commission, along with the Ohio Historical Society, to purchase more than six acres of land in Wood County adjacent to the memorial.
The City of Perrysburg owns the property and purchased it for $400,000, tore down the existing structure, covered the cost of the environmental remediation and is now selling it for $250,000.
To cover the rest of the cost, $50,000 was raised locally by the Fort Meigs Cabinet, a local group organized under the support of the Ohio Historical Society.
“I commend the City of Perrysburg, the Ohio Historical Society, the Cultural Facilities Commission and of course, the local volunteers, for working together to preserve and enhance this historic site for future generations to experience,” Wagoner said.
Fort Meigs played a key role in the War of 1812; more than 2,000 soldiers were stationed and fought there. Shortly after the war, it was abandoned and burned down.
However, the reconstructed fort and museum serves as a center for Ohioans and visitors of all ages to learn about an important time in Ohio and United States history.
