TOLEDO -- The University of Toledo's School of Pharmacy is getting a makeover.
A groundbreaking was held Friday morning between the Block Health Science Building and the Health Education Building on the school's Health Science campus.
The new pharmacy building is set to open in 2010 and will include state-of-the-art laboratories, lecture halls and offices for College of Pharmacy students, faculty and staff.
The college is currently housed in Wolfe Hall on the school's main (Bancroft) campus. The new building, along with Wolfe Hall, will accomodate the college's growing enrollment of nearly 1,500 students. The number of students is up 75% since 2001.
Dr. Johnnie Early, dean of the College of Pharmacy, said the expansion is a natural extension of the college’s research and academic partnerships on UT’s Health Science Campus, and it will enhance current collaborations in the fields of cancer and diabetes treatment, immunology and transplantation, and neurodegenerative disorders.
“The new facilities will improve the human condition by creating the rare opportunity of occupying two modern facilities and offering state-of-the-art infrastructure for teaching and research in pharmacy, the pharmaceutical sciences and patient care,” Early said.
