BROWNHELM TOWNSHIP, OHIO -- Two children from Detroit have been killed and four people injured in a pre-dawn accident along the Ohio Turnpike just east of Sandusky.

The crash occurred around 2:30 a.m. Wednesday near milepost 135.  The Ohio State Highway Patrol says an eastbound vehicle in the center lane was side-swiped by a minivan in the right lane. Both vehicles then slid towards the median, striking the concrete barrier.

The minivan flipped over and three child passengers were thrown from the vehicle.  Two of the children were thrown into the westbound lanes of Turnpike traffic.  One was then struck by a commercial semi travelling westbound.  The truck did not stop and has not been located.

The victims, pronounced dead at the scene, were identified as 5-year-old Jamel El-Amin and 10-year-old Alexia Patrick, both of Detroit. Troopers say their mother, Setita Patrick, 29, 5-month-old brother, and front-seat passenger in their minivan, Jerome Thomas, 37, were transported to an area hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle, Jose Arzuage, 58, was also taken to the hospital.

Troopers say all three children thrown from the minivan were not wearing safety belts.
