PERRYSBURG TWP., OHIO -- Perrysburg Township will receive a $200,000 roadwork development grant in support of First Solar's planned expansion, which is expected to create 134 new jobs.
State Senator Mark Wagoner (R-Toledo) announced the funding Monday after the state Controlling Board voted to approve the grant. "As we continue work to strengthen our economy and create new jobs, we must look to high-tech, high-growth companies such as First Solar," Wagoner said. "By committing state resources to this project, we are not only helping to improve infrastructure and create jobs, but we are also working to lessen our dependence on foreign sources of energy."
First Solar manufactures photovoltaic thin film solar modules. The company hopes to gain new machinery and expand its existing facility in Perrysburg Twp. by 500,000 square-feet. The company was formed in 1999 and has worldwide workforce of more than 4,000 employees. In addition to Perrysburg, the company also has facilities in Germany and Malaysia.
Ohio is in direct competition with Germany and Malaysia for First Solar's planned expansion project. The planned roadwork project includes the resurfacing of Cedar Park Boulevard and upgrading water and sewer lines. The company says completion of the project will help to better accomodate increased truck and employee traffic.
