HOLLAND -- He’s arguable the most talked about plumber in the world. Joe Wurzelbacher didn’t dub himself “Joe the Plumber.” He can thank Senators John McCain and Barack Obama for that.
“He did not choose to be flung into the national and international spotlight. We have a guy who was basically a private person and citizen that was flung into this,” Jon Stainbrook-Lucas Co. Republican Party Chair.
But in order to be a plumber you do need a license. Something our investigation found Joe doesn’t have. In Lucas County you need a license to do residential work. If the boss of a company has valid documentation employees are covered. However, NBC-24 learned neither Joe, nor his boss Al Newell, are authorized to do work in Lucas County.
We talked to some of Joe’s neighbors on Shrewsbury Street in Holland. Everyone said they could care less if he’s a “real” plumber. They just say he’s a real nice guy.
“I don’t care if he’s a plumber or not. He’s just a regular Joe and whatever his profession is I don’t care,” Scott Klawitter.
“Who cares if he's a plumber? He could have been a truck driver or anything. People should just respect somebody for that,” Denise Knisley-neighbor.
“Do you care he’s not a plumber?” Jennifer Taylor. “No I don't, that he's not licensed you mean? It means nothing to me,” John Klawitter-neighbor.
Joe stopped talking with the media before we could ask him about his licensing issue.
The City of Toledo Plumbing Board of Control could punish an individual, or a company, found to be practicing without a valid license. No word if that will happen in his case.
