The Ohio EPA has issued a modified air pollution control permit-to-install (PTI) with state-of-the-art mercury controls for the FDS Coke plant in Toledo.
The plant is proposed to be built on land in east Toledo and Oregon and would produce 1.44 million tons of coke per year.
The permit requires FDS to use state-of-the-art technology to control mercury emissions and allows them to bypass pollution control equipment up to eight days a year for inspections and maintenance. FDS must control at least 90 percent of the mercury produced and emit no more than 51 pounds of mercury per year.
Statement from Mayor Carty Finkbeiner
Regarding Issuance of Permit to Install for U.S. Coking January 31, 2008 I am pleased that the Ohio EPA has issued the permit to install for the U.S. Coking Group, LLC. They have struck a balance for Northwest Ohio’s need for the good-paying jobs and the importance for us to protect our environment. This plant will also provide residents of Northwest Ohio the opportunity to generate affordable energy from the steam generated at the plant, reducing our reliance on Toledo Edison and other conventional sources of power/energy. We will be working with AMP Ohio and others to assure that the power generated in Toledo stays in the area. I hope that ground is broken this spring on Toledo/Oregon property so we can move forward with this important project that will create 150 good paying jobs for the region. |
