TOLEDO, OHIO -- Parents across the state are being made aware that additional immunizations are now required for students entering certain grades this Fall.
The Ohio Department of Health has updated immunization requirements for children starting with the upcoming 2010-2011 school year. Parents of those students entering Kindergarten and seventh grade are required to obtain the certain additional shots for their children: A second dose of Varicella (Chickenpox vaccine) is now required for all kindergarteners. A Tdap (Tetanus, Pertussis, and Diphtheria vaccine) booster shot is required for seventh graders.
"The changes are based on scientific evidence. They are needed to fully protect our children," said Dr. David Grossman, Health Commissioner for the Toledo-Lucas County Health Department.
The new immunizations are required of all kindergarteners and seventh graders, in all counties across the state, beginning this upcoming Fall.
A complete list of all immunization requirements can be found at the Ohio Department of Health Web site. Just type "school entry" in the search box.
Parents of kindergartners and seventh graders are encouraged to make an appointment with their child's doctor or to visit a Shots 4 Tots immunization clinic. To locate a Shots 4 Tots clinic, go to lucascountyhealth.com or call 419-213-4121.
