TOLEDO --
Toledo Public Schools remains in Continuous Improvement, as evaluated by the Ohio Department of Education. This means that TPS has met or exceeded a number of indicators of academic progress as measured by the department.
Five Toledo schools earned Excellent ratings from the ODE. They are Elmhurst Elementary, Harvard Elementary, Start High School, Toledo Early College High School, and the Toledo Technology Academy. However, eight Toledo schools are in Academic Emergency. They are Arts & Media Academy, Cowboy Academy of Business, Glenwood Elementary, Human Services Academy, Jones Junior High School, Pickett Elementary School, Robinson Junior High School, and Sherman Elementary School.
Particularly encouraging for TPS leaders, administration, and faculty were the increase in math and science test scores across all grades tested, a dramatic decrease in suspensions, and an overall increase in attendance.
According to Superintendent John Foley, 31 Toledo Public Schools met or exceeded expected gains in the 2008-09 school year.
Tuesday is the first day of school for TPS students.
