MICHIGAN (AP) -- A monthly Associated Press analysis shows
California, Michigan and South Carolina suffered the most financial
pain during May.
Unemployment, home foreclosures and bankruptcies rose during the
month, contributing to a higher score for the average U.S. county
in the AP's Economic Stress Index.
Williams County in northwest Ohio is one of a handful of
manufacturing communities that have suffered the sharpest increases
in stress scores over the past year.
The AP calculates a score from 1 to 100 based on each county's
unemployment, foreclosure and bankruptcy rates. The higher the
score, the higher the economic stress.
