TOLEDO -- Fireworks are fun for people but for animals they can be scary and dangerous.

Every year, July 5th is a busy day for animal shelters across the country as they collect pets that have gotten out of their pens or fences in an effort to escape the loud noises and bright lights.

So it is best to leave Fido at home and maybe inside the house this Independence Day.

"A lot of animals are nervous about fireworks so if your animal is nervous and you can be home with the animal to keep it calm, that's a good thing. If you're going to be away at a Fourth of July party, let your animal have access to a nice interior room where it's nice and quiet and turn the radio on to maybe drown out a little bit of the sound," said John Dinon, Toledo Area Humane Society Executive Director.

Pets are also hurt each year by fireworks.

So do your best to make sure your furry friends also have a safe and happy fourth.
