MONROE, MICHIGAN -- A funeral service was held today for 5-year-old Nevaeh Buchanan. The little girl was abducted on Sunday, May 24 and her body was found on Thursday, June 4. Close to 2,000 people, most of whom did not know the little girl filed past Nevaeh's casket as she lay in repose at Stewart Road Christian Ministries.
Following the funeral a procession meandered through the streets of Monroe and when it passed Munson park a throng of people lifted balloons in the air. Brittany Essary said the balloons were a way of honoring Nevaeh. "It's just something really special that we can do, for those who did not feel comfortable going to the funeral," Ms. Essary said.
Lifelong Monroe resident Kathryn Olson hope that healing the small community would now begin the healing process. "I just think it was great the way the community came together and the funeral procession, plus everybody here at Munson Park with all the balloons, it was just really touching," Mrs. Olson said.
Nevaeh was laid to rest at St. Joseph Cemetery in Monroe.
