TOLEDO, OHIO -- Emergency crews responded quickly to a crash involving a Toledo Public Schools bus on its way to Toledo Express Airport. The accident scattered debris across four lanes of the road.
The crash occured at Airport Highway and Old Airport Highway around noon Friday.
The Highway Patrol tells NBC24 that a TPS bus and a minivan collided on the road, flipping the bus over onto its side. Troopers say the bus may have over-corrected after being hit, causing it to overturn. The minivan was also overturned in the crash.
At least two air ambulances were called to the scene. Fire personnel called for heavy equipment to help with the rescue.
Ten students on board the bus were able to exit the bus through an emergency hatch in the roof. All ten students were transported by ambulance to St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee as a precationary measure. Four of the students received non-life threatening injuries.
A TPS spokesperson says all but one of the students were from Bowsher High School. The other student was from Waite High School. They were on their way to Toledo Express Airport for an aviation course.
Two occupants inside the minivan were cut out from the vehicle and taken by air to St. Vincent Mercy Medical Center. Firefighters had to cut the vehicle's roof open and pull of its side doors to free the two occupants. As of late Friday afternoon both were listed in critical condition. Elmer Johnson Junior of Montpelier was driving the van with one passenger: Angela Johnson.
Airport Highway was shut down in both directions between Albon and Crissey Roads for hours Friday afternoon.
