FAYETTE, OHIO -- A Fulton County man is getting some unwanted attention for his American Flag. It’s the way this council member is displaying the flag that’s causing the controversy.
Old Glory is flipped in Fayette.
"I guess that's his opinion. He's got his right to express how he feels,” says Wes Schaffner, who lives nearby the upside-down flag.
Passer-bys can’t help but notice a bold statement, an upside down American Flag, hung by homeowner and council member, Craig Rower.
Rower tells NBC 24 this has nothing to do with patriotism. He’s just demonstrating his dissatisfaction with the U.S. Government, and the country.
Rower refused to talk on camera, but did issue a statement for turning the stars and stripes. It reads in part, “I believe the life, liberty and property of U.S. citizens are in dire danger and distress.”
Under the United States Flag Code: “The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.”
Fellow council member, Paul Shaffer, supports his neighbor’s call for help.
“That's what our country's made of. We all have different opinions, and we don't have to agree. We just gotta agree to disagree,” Paul Shaffer.
Paul’s wife Cherly is one of many in this small Fulton County community that does disagree.
"I think it's very disrespectful. I think the whole country knows that we're in distress, and we don't need any reminders. I think it should be flown proudly, and the way it's suppose to be flown,” Cherly Shaffer.
Rower says he is flying the flag correctly considering the topsy-turvy times.
