HOLLAND, OHIO -- AP -- Joe the Plumber said Thursday he doesn't have a license and doesn't need one.

Joe Wurzelbacher, better known as Joe the Plumber, the nickname Republican John McCain bestowed on him during Wednesday's presidential debate, said he works for a small plumbing company that does residential work. Because he works for someone else, he doesn't need a license, he said.

Wurzelbacher was cited by the GOP presidential candidate as an example of someone who wants to buy a plumbing business but would be hurt by Democrat Barack Obama's tax plans. Wurzelbacher said he was surprised that his name was mentioned so many other times.

"That bothered me. I wished that they had talked more about issues that are important to Americans," he told reporters gathered outside his home.

Wurzelbacher, 34, said he doesn't have a good plan put together on how he would buy Newell Plumbing and Heating.

He said the business consists of owner Al Newell and him. Wurzelbacher said he's worked there for six years and that the two have talked about his taking it over at some point.

"There's a lot I've got to learn," he said.

Wurzelbacher said he started his day with an early morning workout and came back to his suburban Toledo home to do live interviews with TV networks.

Reporters camped out by his house overnight and by midmorning there were 21 people on his driveway surrounding him, holding cameras and notebooks.

Wurzelbacher said he's feeling overwhelmed.

"I'm kind of like Britney Spears having a headache. Everybody wants to know about it," he joked.

In Toledo on Sunday, Wurzelbacher told Obama that he was preparing to buy the plumbing company, which earns more than $250,000 a year, and said: "Your new tax plan is going to tax me more, isn't it?"

Obama said that under his proposal taxes on any revenue from $250,000 on down would stay the same, but that amounts above that level would be subject to a 39 percent tax, instead of the current 36 percent rate.

NBC24 Fact Finder:

A representative with Toledo Building Inspection says a plumber must be registered with the state and only then may they apply for a Toledo Plumbing Contractor's license.

Al Newell is a licensed plumbing contractor in the city of Toledo.  Anyone working under him should have a journeyman's plumbing license or an apprenticeship license.  According to Toledo Building Inspection, Newell is responsible for making sure anyone working under him is licensed.

Joe Wurzelbacher does not have an Ohio or city plumbing license.

The City of Toledo Plumbing Board of Control may consider a punishment for Wurzelbacher and/or Newell.

RE:The Plumbers Question-Did you not watch the debate? They discussed it already.

RE:LOL-???What are you talking about that's so funny? Nothing makes sense.

Re:Shame on you 24-Why are you blaming Channel 24 for the stupidity of another person? First of all, Joe wanted to ask Obama a question. The media, not just 24, aired this man on TV. However,it wasn't just 24 to sell his information to Good Morning America, CNN, etc....He wasn't too embarrassed if he went on "Huckabee". You don't think since mentioning how much he owed in taxes that no one is going to help this man out? I like to call it, "Rise, Fall, and Defame" because you put your business out there for others to see or don't see, and feel about wee big afterwards because it didn't go accordingly.

Joe could have asked not to be on camera, but you cannot ask a local media station not to air something they believe is news, whether you think so or not. All news channels show and say trashy things. Whether it's your opinion or not, you should make sense of it before commenting on it.

By the way, their privacy rights above is for posting your comments, and does not pertain to them. Local media have other rules/laws to abide by, and aforementioned is not one of them.

Last but not least RE: It doesn't matter-Well, it does matter. Joe having his license, It shows credentials, it will look good on his resume for another place of employment just in case his boss changes his mind.

The Plumbers Question

Instead of reporting on "Joes'"background to be fair, acurate,& honest for the "People" as you reportedly say.Why not report on the question in hand? Why not choose to report on his question?Show some numbers/examples drawn up with both Pesidential
candidates plans and show what/which plan would benift the AVERAGE JOE in the plumber pay scale bracket? TO BE
"FAIR , ACURATE , & HONEST

Shame on you NBC 24

I can't believe that you are so hungry for news that you would invade this man's life. It is and was none of your business. You had a choice or not to air his personal information and you even knew it could cause problems for this man. You obviously don't care about the AVERAGE JOE.. geeze Joe was worried about getting screwed by our government and now he got screwed by you NBC 24... Oh and right at the top of this comment page it states not to post obscene, abusive, threatening, or an INVASION OF PRIVACY. I guess those rules aren't the same for your news station. You should be ashamed what you have done.

So Joe makes $40,000 and isn't licensed

Posted by George Mase, Toledo - Friday, October 17, 2008 at 11:02 a.m.

So the real Joe is not a licensed plumber, he owes back taxes, and he really makes $40,000 per year. About a 180 degree difference from the fictional Joe he portrayed himself as. He has no real plans to buy his boss' business, couldn't afford it anyway, and his boss' business doesn't make that much money anyway. Both Joe and his boss would be paying less taxes under Obama than they would under McCain. But Joe is happy to pay more in taxes so actual rich people who couldn't care less about him can pay less? Smart thinking Joe. Don't think about your own best interests, worry about people who make more in a year than you'll make in a decade.

It doesn't matter

Posted by Al Cap, Toledo - Friday, October 17, 2008 at 10:56 a.m.

How does not having a license change anything? Has the guy not been a plumber for the last several years? He must to doing a quality job if he is being considered by his employer to be the next owner. Franly, all having licenses is another dirty government scheme to make money off of the people. The question Joe posed could very well be what opens peoples eyes to Obama's socialist idea. The liberal media can't stand that fact that this one guy was willing to stand up and ask the hard question of Obama that McCain and every American should have been asking all along. It's about time more people stand up, because the attempt to silence those who do not agree is not something that will be tolerated in this country.

This country under Obama

Posted by John Jones, Ohio - Friday, October 17, 2008 at 10:45 a.m.

This is a perfect example of what this country will be like under Obama. You disagree or question anything Obama stands for and your life will be ruined. Unbelieivable!! All you Obama supporters better wake up before it's too late. If socialism is something you want then, please, by all means, move to Cuba! We can all see the change Obama and his liberal media buddies plan to bring. McCain may not be the greatest candidate, but atleast we know we'll still have the rights granted to us in the consitution.

No dissent of Dear Leader

Posted by mike m, nj - Friday, October 17, 2008 at 6:39 a.m.

Sobering to see how the politics of "hope and change" play out in real life. Ask a question Obama doesn't like, no matter how legitimate the question, then be prepared to have your life investigated and destroyed by Obama's allies. What a frightening assualt on dissent, liberty, and free speech just around the corner if Obama wins and has a congressional super-majority.

Not licensed?

Posted by Chantal Rippeth, Walbridge, Oh - Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 9:04 p.m.

This is a union city. Why isnt't "Joe Plumber" and his company licensed in the city of TOLEDO? Everyone working in Toledo should carry a license in order to perform work.

Was Joe put on Blast?

Posted by Alicia May, Ohio - Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 7:37 p.m.

Since Joe's name was mentioned in last night's debate, it started off sweet for Joe i would imagine, and then it all turned sour real fast! He just wanted to ask the senator a question and McCain trying to gain any kind of material to make himself shine mentioned Joe's name. WAIT did McCain even meet Joe? McCain mispronounced his last name during the debate and went a little further and stated something about his good friend Joe, I thought Senator Obama was in Toledo and not McCain? The media or someone has begun to dig into Joe’s personal business and it has surfaced that he is not licensed, and owes back taxes. Will this affect his jobs he gets now? Will this effect if the company he works for name? All I’m curious to know is who Joe tends to vote for now since he has officially been put on blast with the world wide news!! And just know I’ll be up and tuned in to David Letterman, because I know he is going to eat this one up like “Mom’s leftover meatloaf”!!

Digging into Joe's background. Odd how William Ayers is left alone to earn a 6 figure income and be a "respected" member of the Chicago elite, meanwhile Joe and his boss are out of jobs thanks to the new politics of change and hope.

Joe was minding his own business tossing a football with his son when Obama entered Joe's property. Joe makes a valid point and so the Obama-lovin media twists the story to focus on Joe's background. Give me a break. Look out newscasters, were going to do a background on you and plaster it all over the media. I recommend keeping the story on the topic at hand and leave the man alone.

I can't help but roll my eyes.

Posted by Keisha May, Toledo - Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 7:06 p.m.

I was just watching the 6:00 news and I couldn't help but roll my eyes. Mr. Joe...... are you serious? When you jump in front of a cameramake sure you don't let things get too far gone especialy when you know you are misleading people. Voters could have been influenced by his views. He doesn't even have a plan set in stone for this "career move." Both he and Mccain made it sound as if he had these plans in motion. Taking offers for shows and interviews. That man knew he didn't have any license. Well Mr. Joe you got your five minutes of fame...... how does it feel? Do share.

Why did i or others go to school, become journymen and pay for licenses and pay our taxes. It sounds as if he's doing commercial work by his own admission. McCain mentions this guy saying he is typical not.No certifications.Other companies have to bid against the "good" firm he works for on a playing field that is not level.Your doctor should be unlicensed too i guess? Is this really typical?

another example

Posted by maria d, northwest ohio - Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 6:31 p.m.

i feel that it does matter that joe the plumber doesn't have a license. if our county and state require a license that he should have one. i feel that it's just another example of republicans thinking they are above the law.

Does it make a difference?

Posted by Tyler C., Port Clinton - Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 6:18 p.m.

I'm sure there are plenty of other more "bad" plumbers out there. Majority people earlier today reading this story probably didn't even know a plumbing licence existed or was required by law, so does it really matter to us?

Mr. Wurzelbacher might have not even been aware that the employee himself needs a licence too. There is no reason to be in shock to finding out common "bad" things every single person on Earth has and would not like to share.

"Regulate him out of a job"

Give me a break. All the other plumbers in this town pay for a license and manage to make a profit. This guy is just trying to game the system.

Something tells me you wouldn't stand up for a Hispanic worker doing the same...

The plumber has been vetted more than Obama!

Posted by Kevin P., Austin, TX - Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 4:28 p.m.

The press has dug into Joe the plumber's background with an alacrity not seen with Obama himself.

That'll teach the plumber about questioning his betters.

Our govenment in action

A classic example of our govenment in action Joe the plumber [working guy] breaking his back all day for his son & himself to have a decent lifestyle and the big shots are going to regulate him out of a job
because they didnt collect a fee from him to work in Toledos mud But Wallstreet big shots can live a lifestyle you and I can't even imagine due to not enough regulation and we get to pay the fee... twice

Go figure!

Posted by Go Palin, Toledo - Thursday, October 16, 2008 at 3:04 p.m.

It appears as though if you receive notoriety in the national media for raising a poignant question to a presidential candidate you'll be investigated by the media. Who cares about the license issue. The question he raised was important to small businesses who WILL suffer under Obama's tax increases.

Beware all McCain supporters: If you ask intelligent questions to Barack Obama it's open season on you. Fibbing on your taxes, stealing packs of Sweet N Low from the local restaurant, drinking your milk straight from the carton, and (heaven forbid) leaving the toilet seat up.

Obama supporters: Ask questions to McCain and win a chance to star in Oliver Stone's next movie!
