TOLEDO, OH -- Harvey, the Zoo’s male chimpanzee, is not only a delightful animal, he’s also a pretty good artist! A painting by Harvey will be auctioned on Tuesday, September 16, beginning at 5:00 p.m.
The Animal Art Auction will be presented via the online Auction Network, and the proceeds from the sale of Harvey’s painting will benefit the Zoo’s wildlife conservation efforts.
This three-hour live auction is expected to draw a worldwide audience, and will feature appearances by wildlife celebrities Jack Hanna and Nigel Marven. People are encouraged to visit the auction (which they can access through the Zoo’s website, www.toledozoo.org), where they can view the entire catalog, see video bios on the animal artist and even place proxy bids before the auction begins.
Harvey has been demonstrating his artistic abilities for years. His painting is part of his quiet time activities. As he makes little grooming noises, he carefully chooses his colors and brushes, and he appears to be careful to ensure that each work of art is just how he wants it. Creating art is safe for the animals; the paints are non-toxic and washable. In addition, it provides enrichment for them, as they are able to interact with their environment and manipulate objects. They are always given the choice whether or not to paint; Harvey seems to enjoy it a great deal.
"Zoos and aquariums accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums are committed to the highest standards of animal care and welfare," says Pam McKissick, founder and CEO of Auction Network. "These institutions are leaders in conservation science and education, protecting wildlife and wild places and connecting millions of people to this important cause. Auction Network is excited to bring this dynamic auction to animal and art lovers worldwide."
