MONROE, MI -- Senator Barack Obama joined members of the Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 671 in Monroe on Monday for their Labor Day Bar-B-Q.

Obama targeted his audience with talk about a union mentality and restoring that vision in America.

"That sense that we're all in this together, that we rise and fall as one nation, that's what the union movement's about and that's what this campaign is about and what America should be about," Obama said.

But talk quickly turned to the Gulf Coast and the need for relief for victims of Hurricane Gustav.

Obama told people, "understand that people are going to need your help and this is one of those moments where we go above politics."

After signing autographs and shaking hands, Obama took a moment to talk to the media where questions were lobbed about John McCain's running mate.

Governor Sarah Palin announced today that her 17 year old, unmarried daughter, is five months pregnant.

"This shouldn't be part of our politics," Obama said. "It has no relevance to Governor Palin's performance as governor or her potential performance as a vice president. My mom had me when she was 18."

Also discussed today by the media was the tabloid reports that Sarah Palin faked her recent pregnancy and that her newborn son is actually her daughter's.

Some conservative blogs had linked Obama's campaign to that story and today he told reporters he was deeply offended by that insinuation.

Obama wrapped up in Michigan pretty quickly and headed to Milwaukee for another rally just a few hours later.
