MASON, OHIO (AP) -- Authorities in southwest Ohio say a driver admitted that she was using a cell phone to text-message a friend when her car went off the road, hit a mailbox and overturned.

Eighteen-year-old Sarah Stearns of Monroe was thrown from the vehicle about 2 a.m. Wednesday. A spokesman for the State Highway Patrol says Stearns has been cited for operating a vehicle without reasonable control.

Stearns was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officials say they don't know how many accidents occur while drivers are texting. The Ohio Department of Public Safety says similar practices, such as talking on a cell phone or putting on makeup, fall into a catch-all category of "driver inattention."

You say that there shouldnt be any new laws passed in regards to talking on the cell while driving,if they cause an accident then they just pay all that persons bills or go to jail. Now, why put peoples lives in danger? If there can be a law that states it is against the law to talk on the cell phone while driving, and they catch these people that do that, isnt it worth it to pull them over and give them a ticket instead of letting them take the chance to kill others, perhaps someone in your family? If the there is a way to stop it before the accident happens, wouldnt you want that instead of attending a funeral for your loved one, or having people attend your funeral? Can you answer those questions or are you just that dumb minded?

Driving Impaired

I'm sorry, but I cannot agree that we need laws to protect us from the vehicle operators who do things besides operate the vehicle. For instance, I do not agree with the drunk driving laws because they seem to be predatory in nature - they set an arbitrary limit for "impairment" that is inflicted on drivers who have not caused an accident, harmed another person, or damaged property. I also do not want a law preventing Missy Airhead from talking on her cell phone, sending text messages to her therapist, or catching the latest scores and comments on the internet. Let's just use the laws that already exist. If she causes an accident she pays dearly for that. If there are injuries she is responsible for all medical bills, including her own. She also would be subject to suit for pain and suffering, lost wages, and so forth. If she kills someone in the process of irresponsible operation of her vehicle, well, she should get the same punishment as one who uses any deadly force against another human being. I liked what they did to the guy who wiped out a family on I-280 last year. Go to jail, go directly to jail. Do not pass go, do no collect $200. Period!

When are they

going to make a law that it is illegal to talk on the cell phone or put on makeup while driving? I see so many people not paying attention to what they are doing while driving, because they have that dumb cell phone to their ears. They are either swirving or going under the speed limit when they are talking on the cell while driving. I have seen many accidents happen because of this, as well as women putting on makeup while driving. Put the crap on your face before you leave the house. If they are in that much of a hurry, they should of got up earlier to get their stuff done, so they dont take the chance of causing an accident. These idiotic people really tick me off.

Incredible.

First, I am glad the young lady is ok. Something really needs to be done to make new laws against using cell phones while driving or enforcement of the existing laws. I am an ex cop and believe there are more accidents caused by distracted drivers texting or talking than there are drunk driving accidents. I have been rear ended twice by female drivers yapping on their cell phones and have to swerve to avoid being hit by female distracted drivers daily. I have observed on the highway and city driving drivers talking, texting (with their head down doing 70mph), eating, reading a newspaper/book, driver watching a movie and probably some things I don't want to know they're doing. Driving requires your complete attention, hopefully it does not take an accident to learn that.
