WAUSEON, OH -- Six-year-old Samuel Bowman of Wauseon, OH has been on a feeding tube for four years.  His parents have created a 100-percent organic, whole-foods formula recipe.

Samuel has multiple congenital heart defects.  He had his first open heart surgery at just two years old.  It's been a long road for Brian and Debbie Bowman.  They are both registered nurses and have worked hard to provide their son with the best care possible.  Now, they are sharing what they've learned to help others.

After Sam's open heart surgery, he came home with nearly a dozen medications.

“And they're bitter. And there's a bunch of them.  And it was just rather unpleasant…and it's a bunch of times a day,” said Brian.

Out of protest, two-year-old Sam went on a food strike.  So, he underwent a second surgery to insert a gastric tube for feeding.

“That's where Sam got his nutrition for several months after that,” said Brian.

The standard canned formula gave Sam acid reflux.  Also, the Bowmans knew it was not enough to sustain a little boy recuperating from two major surgeries.  So, Brian started experimenting.  “The blender, I forgot to put the lid on.  You turn it on…it's all over the place.”

About six weeks later, Brian had made a 100% organic, whole-foods recipe he's branded "Samuel's Formula."

He recently posted a video on-line to teach anyone how to make it.

“We think we have a pretty neat formula and thought other parents would be interested in it,” said Brian.

The Bowmans take pride in their Arrowpeak Healing Farm where they produce organic ingredients for the formula's recipe.  But, Brian says anyone can make it.  Brian and Deb actually run their own health food store as well.  You can buy nearly all of the ingredients there or at other area health food stores.  Those ingredients are egg yolks, banana, and whole-food supplements like coconut oil.  The two ingredients you can’t buy at the grocery are homemade yogurt and homemade beef broth.  Brian says the best substitute for the homemade yogurt is Stoney Field Organic Whole Milk Yogurt.  On Samuel’s Formula website Brian also provides a link to a website where Brian says you can order healthy, nutrient-rich beef broth.

Four years after starting the homemade formula, Sam still gets about 40% of his calories from this supplement.  His acid reflux is gone and he's learned to love food again.

“I like to eat chicken on the bone,” said Samuel.

The Bowmans consulted their doctor about the formula and had it approved.

It can also be used for adults.  In Brian’s on-line video he explains minor alterations you can do to the recipe to make it for an adult.  He says you can make it as-is for adults, there will just be a few extra vitamins in it that adults don’t necessarily need.
