BLISSFIELD, MI -- One of the tallest walkers in the area starting an impossible sounding hike Monday morning. Neil Sauter crossed the Ohio Border in the Toledo area and headed north.
He plans to walk on three foot stilts across the entire state of Michigan and into cross into Wisconsin. That's more than 800 miles in eight weeks.
The 25 year old from Lenawee county has mild cerebral palsy. He hopes to raise money for United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan and at the same prove a point.
"I really want to prove that people with disabilities can be successful If they have the proper accommodations. So If having stilts helps me get a cross the state, then imagine what having a wheelchair can do for somebody else," he said.
Students at New Bedford Academy in Lambertville donated a check for $350.00 dollars to Neil's cause. His father is the Principal of the school.
"He's amazing. We tried to talk him out of it at first. He made his mind up he was going to do this. We decided instead of fighting him, we better support him. We're supporting him all the way," said Greg Sauter.
Neil started his 830 mile journey by sauntering over a line of students in the school parking lot. He is encouraging other school officials on his route to contact him and schedule a visit.
"I really want kids to learn, you can rise above any challenge," he said.
The ambitious young man holds the unofficial world record for stilt-walking 26 miles in a marathon.
