A shocking video released Monday reveals a bigger issue --- Physical confrontations among girls are on the increase

TOLEDO, OH -- With the Internet has come a new form of fighting.

"Sometimes some of the verbal confrontations that we have are based on, well, he said this or she said this on Myspace.  You know, then they get face to face and it’s become a problem,” said Bowsher High School Principal Larry Black.

As Black points out, these viral fights are turning physical.

In shocking video released Monday out of Polk County, Florida, a gang of six girls beats up another teenager because they said she posted something offensive on her Myspace page.  They beat her so badly she was sent to the hospital and had a concussion, eye injuries and bruises.

Police say the gang wanted the tape to post it on YouTube.  Either way, it's an extreme case of how violent girls can be.  Students say they aren’t concerned.

"Not really because it's normal now," said Bowsher High School senior Darlene Sampson. "You hear about a girl fight and you're just like, oh well."

"Fights happen bad at this school," said Bowsher High School senior Kayleigh Moore.  "But, any normal school has them.  Everyone talks.  You've just got to accept it."

And students who haven't seen the fights have heard of them.

"So and so was fighting so and so...or, so and so wanted to fight so and so….or she was going to fight me…or she didn't even try…or she didn't show up,” said Bowsher High School junior Caroline Keller.

Just Tuesday, there was a close call at Bowsher.

"There were two young girls that were into a verbal situation today but we were actually able to intervene in that one before it became a physical confrontation,” said Black, who also said there was potential for it to escalate to a physical fight.

Fortunately, Black says, he hasn't heard of or seen anything as bad as what is shown in the video released Monday.  And he adds, although female violence has increased, he says schools are still a very safe place to be and it’s the parents’ responsibility to keep watch over the children at home.
