A selfless child's story inspired a Hires Dental staff member to gather support for a local charity, Hannah's Socks.
Hannah's Socks was started four years ago by Hannah Turner, then four years old.
She was serving Thanksgiving dinner with her family at a local homeless shelter when saw a man whose shoes had split open, revealing he wasn't wearing socks.
Hannah wasn't convinced when her mother, Doris, told her his shoes would keep his feet warm.
"Mommy, he can have my socks," she said.
The next day, Doris and Hannah purchased socks and distributed them to local shelters, because as Hannah says, "warm feet, warm heart."
Now, alongside Dr. Hires Dental wants to help homeless individuals and families get something new this holiday season by asking its entire staff and patients to help collect socks for this good cause.
Socks can be dropped off at Hires Dental Care during treatment hours until Thursday, December 17th. They can be contacted at 419-475-6673.
Local Girl Scouts Troop 60703 and Brownie Troop 75019 from Whiteford Agricultural will be donating socks and kicking off their own campaign, along side Hines, to collect socks at their school.
Hannah's Socks serves homeless and domestic-violence shelters in the Midwest, with offices in Toledo and Cincinnati.
The charity collects donated materials in the form of new men's, women's and children's socks and undergarments. It then works with local shelters for distribution to both the homeless and victims of domestic violence.
It also supports programs serving under-privileged children.
