TOLEDO, OH -- Many are cutting back in this recession and you might think the interior design business would be a luxury most are doing without.

But one local custom decorator says business is booming. Turns out, she is serving a growing niche

Rose Toth of Rose Custom Interiors works with clients who are building new homes and undertaking expensive renovations. But, right now, Toth is most in-demand because of her downsizing services.

"People are doing a lot of downsizing right now and choosing homes that they can live in and are efficiently used," said Toth.

One big clientele base is seniors who are leaving homes they have been in for decades for the security of a retirement community. It is a move that involves a lot of decision-making.

"We have to really decide what furniture that is sentimental, what are things they've collected over the years, hand-me-downs or through travels and how can we recreate that in a smaller space but still really have that vibe and personality of how they want their home to feel," said Toth.

For many seniors, just leaving their home is tough, but Anne Cushnie knew it was time.

"It was a five bedroom and I have four kids and they said don't keep this thing because of us," said Cushnie.

Still, actually picking up and moving from a huge home to a smaller one was easier said than done.

That is why Swan Creek Retirement Village makes Toth's services available to residents.

"I had to pick the colors and the flooring and the countertops and carpet and all this and I had to do it in about two weeks time and it would have been a hard job without the help of Rose," said Cushnie.

In many cases, this interior designer ends up being a counselor, a mediator and often the only person there to help seniors through a tough move.

"I've called and actually set up people's cable before because it's just a part of the process of moving in and really creating the home," said Toth.

As the jobless rates remain high and the population continues to age, designing for downsizing is probably just smart business.

Rose's Tips for Downsizing:

  • Don't design around trends, but your style
  • Consider reupholstering pieces to work in different rooms
  • When you don't have a lot of room, remember flat screen TVs take up less space
  • Seniors should avoid rugs, they are tripping hazards
  • If necessary, leave safe pathways for wheelchairs or walkers
  • Have someone with an unbiased opinion weigh in on what furniture to keep
