TOLEDO- High school students can win a $5,000 college scholarship from ProMedica Health System (PHS) in their Fields of Green competition aimed at preventing childhood obesity.
The competition challenges students to design a health and fitness program for elementary school children and to include nutritious snack options.
Students in grades 10-12 from Northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan are eligible to participate and teams can have two to four students.
Each member of the winning team will be awarded a $5000 college scholarship and their school will receive $1000. In addition, their design will be a pilot program in several local elementary schools.
“As the leading health care provider in the region, we feel that our role in encouraging healthy lifestyles, solid nutrition and exercise habits will have a lasting positive effect on those individuals and families we are privileged to serve, “said President and Chief Operating Officer, Randy Oostra. “We want Fields of Green along with other health and wellness programs to be part of a journey that leads to healthier kids and families.”
PHS has a large and comprehensive initiative to implement health and nutrition programs against obesity, and the Fields of Green program is a part of it.
A new program, called the Healthy Kids Conversation Map® Program, will be started this fall and led by trained PHS employees. They will teach a series of 30-minute interactive sessions in various community settings focusing on establishing healthy nutrition and exercise habits in children and adults.
PHS’ first competition, called Lunch 101: Food for Thought, awarded $42,000 to students and schools last year, asking high school students to generate an affordable and nutritionally-balanced elementary school lunch program.
