Become A Mentor

To whom it may concern:

Project F.B.I. (Father Being Involved) is a faith-based organization founded in 2007 to respond to the needs of ex-offenders and the challenges that they face as they release from prison. It has been our mission to engage men with criminal pasts and empower them with holistic tools resulting in stronger fathers, husbands and community leaders. We seek to do this by helping the offender develop a list of personal goals (e.g. education, housing, employment) and formulate a plan to accomplishing those goals. It is also our intent to connect each offender with a mentor to provide a sense of support, guidance and encouragement. For those individuals who may have families, we also have available fatherhood training and communication training for the client and the significant other that are interested.

Project FBI (Father’s Being Involved) is a part of a collaboration know as the KIF (Key Initiative Focus) Reentry Collaborative. As a part of this collaborative we have taken on the responsibility of recruitment, training, and ongoing support of volunteers, and matching volunteer mentors to persons exiting incarceration.

A majority of offenders go home without transitional support services in place. In fact, each year roughly 28,000 offenders are released from correctional facilities across Ohio, less than half are released to a form of community supervision. A comprehensive network of services for ex-offenders making this transition will enhance the safety of Ohio’s communities.

In Lucas County approximately 1,200 people are incarcerated annually with approximately 60% (720) serving one year or less. It is our goal to provide mentors to 120 of these individuals within a one year period.

On June 14, we will be holding our first major training for these volunteers. Our goal is to have at least 100 persons attending this event with the intent to become a mentor to an ex-offender. Our primary target is, but not limited to, the faith-based community. We understand that the pastor cannot do it all, but here is an opportunity for the membership of the local churches to live up calling that the Lord has placed upon us as believers.
He says in Matthew 25.36, “I was in prison, and ye came unto me.”

For those individuals who are interesting in finding out more or actually becoming a volunteer the should call our office number at 419-536-4419.
