Norm Van Ness is the Chief Meteorologist at NBC24, Toledo’s Weather Station.
He is a member of the National Weather Association and holds that organization's coveted Seal of Approval . Norm is also an associate member of the American Meteorlogical Society .
Norm joined Toledo’s Weather Station in October of 2003 from his previous job as Chief Meteorologist at KETK in Tyler, Texas.
Prior to that, Norm worked in Colorado at several award winning stations both as a weather anchor and as an assignment editor, breaking and covering national news events - including the Columbine High School shootings, the murder of Jon Benet Ramsey, the arrests of the Texas Seven and several major storm events including tornados, hailstorms and blizzards.
Norm is a native of Northwest Ohio, having grown up in Sandusky County very near the town of Gibsonburg.
Upon graduation from high school, Norm joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida where he worked as an Avionics Technician on the F-15. Norm received numerous awards and recognition while serving, including being named Maintenance Technician of the Year and receiving the John Levitow Honor Graduate Award from the Air Force’s Non-Commissioned Officer Training School.
Norm was deployed to Saudi Arabia in the early 1990’s as part of Operation Desert Shield / Desert Storm. Norm returned to Northwest Ohio after serving his country to attend Bowling Green State University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Broadcast Journalism.
After graduation, Norm continued his weather education through Mississippi State University.
Look for Norm to be "out in the elements" chasing storms and bringing viewers the in-depth, up-close and personal weather coverage they expect from Toledo’s Weather Station.
Recently, Norm was selected to the Board of Trustees of the D.O.V.E. Fund ...an oganization that works to build elementary schools, nurserys, health facilities and clean water systems in some of the poorest regions of Vietnam.
Norm is a big sprint car racing fan, and you will see him in the infield at tracks like Fremont Speedway and Attica Raceway Park doing his second favorite hobby - photography. Norm also enjoys spending time with his wife Amy and new dog, Sydney, an Australian Shepherd which he hopes will become his assistant during school visits in the future.
